The Brazil@Nor-Shipping 2023 event, organized by ABRAN (The Norwegian Shipowners´ Association Brazil) in collaboration with the Consulate General of Norway in Rio, Innovation Norway, and the Chambers of Commerce (NBCC and BNCC), emerged as a resounding success, captivating the participation of over 600 industry professionals across seminars and social events. This momentous event witnessed the convergence of distinguished Brazilian and Norwegian representatives from organizations such as the Brazilian Navy, ANTAQ, ANP, EPE, Petrobras, and Transpetro. Together, they shared the stage, engaging in insightful discussions on the future of the maritime and offshore shipping industry.

Strengthening Collaboration:

The event kickstarted with highly productive meetings between Brazilian and Norwegian maritime authorities, setting the tone for constructive conversations on the International Maritime Organization’s agenda towards achieving net-zero emissions. In these sessions, different strategies to enhance cooperation between the two countries were deliberated, underscoring their shared commitment to sustainability.

Exquisite Welcome and Opening Ceremonies:

The Norwegian Shipowners´ Association and ABRAN hosted a vibrant welcome reception at its historical building in downtown Oslo, setting a cheerful ambiance for the Brazilian delegation and nearly 100 attendees. NSA Board member, Ms. Marianne Møgster, delivered opening words laying the foundation for a week filled with collaboration and knowledge exchange. The official opening of Nor-Shipping took place at the majestic Town Hall, hosted by the City Mayor of Oslo, drawing a substantial global delegate attendance.

Captivating Seminars and Keynote Speakers:

Brazil@Nor-Shipping 2023 program brought together renowned keynote speakers and panelists taking center stage, captivating the audience with their insights into the shipping industry’s journey towards decarbonization. Esteemed individuals such as Fleet Admiral Cunha, the Brazilian Navy Chief of Staff, and Jarand Rystad, CEO of Rystad Energy, among others, shared their expertise and experiences, providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in achieving a sustainable future.

Exploring Key Topics:

The conference featured a diverse range of speakers and topics, driving the audience’s understanding of Brazil’s political and economic outlook, business opportunities, and concrete actions towards a greener future. Key figures such as Felipe Meira, President of ABRAN, and Harald Solberg, CEO of NSA, set the stage for discussions on strengthening partnerships and trade relations between Brazil and Norway.

Prominent speakers, moderators, and panelists engaged in enriching discussions throughout the event. Topics covered included the perspectives of the Brazilian Navy, ANP, ANTAQ, EPE, Petrobras, and Transpetro on the green transition, offshore wind sector challenges and opportunities, talent acquisition in the offshore and shipping industry, and doing business in Brazil’s shipping sector.

Promoting Bilateral Ties and Cultural Exchange:

The event not only emphasized business collaborations but also fostered cultural exchanges and strengthened the bond between Brazil and Norway. The Brazilian Ambassador to Norway, H.E. Mr. Enio Cordeiro, graciously opened his residence for a cordial gathering, allowing the Brazilian delegation to learn more about the long-standing economic relations between the two nations and the vital work of the Brazilian Embassy in Norway.

Celebrations and Recognition:

The Brazil@Nor-Shipping 2023 event offered delegates numerous opportunities for networking and celebration. The traditional Brazilian Party, organized by Kincaid Law Firm, held at Høymagasinet in Oslo, brought together over 300 people, enabling them to connect, exchange ideas, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere while savoring traditional cuisine. The event also honored distinguished individuals who played a pivotal role in promoting business between Norway and Brazil, including Lars Peder Solstad, Marit Cecilie Albretsen, Vice Admiral Wilson Lima Filho, and Thomas Saxegaard.

Empowering Green Shipping and Business in Brazil:

The second day of the Brazil@Nor-Shipping conference focused on green shipping and provided valuable insights into doing business in Brazil’s shipping sector. Esteemed speakers and panelists, including Vice Admiral (Ret.) Ralph Dias, President of the Brazilian Maritime Court, and Roberta Nobre, General Manager of Services Procurement at Petrobras, shared their expertise, shedding light on regulations, contracts, insurance, and the benchmark with Norway. The program also emphasized the Norwegian green shipping strategy and Brazil’s commitment to the IMO’s green shipping strategy.

Conclusion:

The Brazil@Nor-Shipping 2023 event was an undeniable triumph, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships between Brazilian and Norwegian maritime stakeholders. With its vibrant seminars, captivating keynote speakers, and ample opportunities for networking, this event solidified its place as a cornerstone in the maritime calendar, working towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the industry. As plans begin for the next edition in 2025, according to Mr. Ricardo Fernandes, Executive Director of ABRAN and coordinator of Brazil@Nor-Shipping project for the 5^th consecutive time, NSA and ABRAN are committed to further strengthening the relationship between Brazil and Norway, driving innovation, and building a greener shipping industry.

The 5th edition of the Brazil x Norway seminar was a great success, gathering the main stakeholders of the energy, maritime and port sector at FGV on the 27^th of September. The event was organized by ABRAN in cooperation with FGV Direito Rio and Royal General Consulate of Norway in Rio and this time the theme was “The green transformation and its regulatory impacts on the energy, shipping and port sectors”.

The Director of FGV Law School Rio, Professor Sergio Guerra, opened the seminar pointing out the key role of the school on developing research, in its Master and PHD programs, focusing on concrete challenges of the regulation in Brazil.  According to Professor Guerra, the school created several initiatives and platforms to improve the knowledge of regulation in the country.

The President of ABRAN, Felipe Meira, Managing Director of Solstad in Brazil, addressed in his presentation the great potential of Brazil towards the energy transition and the important role of the Norwegian shipowners in the country. Mr. Meira also highlighted the strong commitment of the Norwegian shipowners towards the zero-emission pathway and the role of ABRAN to present a forward-looking agenda in the country, strengthening the relationship between Brazil and Norway.

The Ambassador of Norway to Brazil, Odd Magne Rudd, presented the strategy of Norway towards the green transition, including the green shipping agenda. H.E. Ambassador Rudd also presented several initiatives undertaken by Norway to decarbonize the maritime industry, including electrification of ferries and the adoption of new technologies.

The industry session was headlined by the most important stakeholders of the energy, maritime and port sectors, including the National Secretary of Ports, Mr. Mario Povia, Director General of ANTAQ, Eduardo Nery, Director General of ANP, Admiral Rodolfo Saboia and Executive Manager of Petrobras Marina Barbosa.

The presentations and discussions moderated buy by Ms. Camila Mendes Vianna, partner of Kincaid Law Firm and member of the Maritime and Port committee of OAB-RJ and Paulo Jucá, Partner of FCDG and coordinator of the regulatory committee of Ports from FGV highlighted that the green transition is high on the agenda from Government and Private sector, which according to the participants will unlock great opportunities for the countries.

After more than two years of social restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic, Nor-Shipping weeklong program, 4^th to 7^th April, in Lillestrøm and Oslo, provided to be the perfect arena to reflect on trends and challenges of the world and discuss premising topics of the global offshore and maritime shipping industry, at the same time allowing intense social interaction among key players of the industry.

Brazil, for the 4^th consecutive time, headlined the main event with a dedicated agenda organized by ABRAN/NSA focus on current and upcoming business opportunities. The Brazilian delegation was formed by business leaders, authorities and stakeholders from different sectors, including the Brazilian Ambassador, H.E. Mr. ENIO CORDEIRO, Director General of Navigation, Fleet Admiral WLADMILSON BORGES, Director General of National Regulatory Agency of Petroleum – ANP, Rear Admiral (Ret.) RODOLFO SABOIA, Director General of National Regulatory Agency for Waterways Transport and Ports – ANTAQ, Mr. EDUARDO NERY, Director of Ports and Coasts, Vice Admiral SERGIO SALGUERINHO, President of Maritime Court, Vice Admiral (Ret.) WILSON LIMA FILHO, Deputy Secretary of Climate and International Affairs, Mr. MARCELO DONINNI FREIRE, Director of Infrastructure Development, Mr. RAFAEL FURTADO, Head of Ports and Offshore installation licensing from IBAMA, Ms. ROBERTA COX, CEO of Brazilian Association of Wind power – ABEEOLICA, Ms. ELBIA GANNOUM, General Manager of Petrobras Suppliers relationship, Mr. MARCELO PEREIRA, General Manager Petrobras Subsea Operations, Mr. MARCUS ARAÚJO, Head of Supply Chain of Equinor Brazil, Mr. RAFAEL TRISTÃO and many others representatives from the industry.

The weeklong program started with – The Ocean Leadership Conference – opened by the speech of Mr. Bjørnar Selnes Skjæran Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy. The conference was built around the theme #ACTION and showcased concrete examples of actions companies have taken to manage existing challenges and explore innovative ways companies can build more resilient, profitable, and environmentally responsible business models to survive and thrive.

The Brazil@Nor-Shipping seminar, in Lillestrøm, was attended by more than 100 people and was opened by Mr. FELIPE MEIRA, President of ABRAN, The Norwegian Shipowners Association in Brazil, welcoming all participants and highlighting the devastating impacts of the corona pandemic, in Brazil and Norway, “with tragic losses and economic burden being felt until today”.

Mr. Meira also pointed out that “the astonish Russia invasion on Ukraine aggravated the already challenging economic and geopolitical landscape, bringing back vivid memories from the Second World War, with the shelling, curfews, and underground shelters.” 

According to Mr. Meira “The global maritime and offshore shipping industry proved to be resilient during these challenging times, keeping the flow of international trade and services.”  And emphasized that “We shall recognize the essential role of seafarers, keyworkers, who were heavily affected by disruptions on flights and road transportation, connected to social restrictions.”

Following the President of ABRAN opening speech, CEO of NSA, Mr. Harald Solberg addressed the audience recognizing the strategic importance of Brazil to the Norwegian Shipowners, presenting some impressive figures demonstrating the Norwegian investments in Brazil, especially in the offshore and maritime industry. According to Mr. Solberg, “Nowadays, the level of Norwegian accumulated direct investments in Brazil, without asset transfer, exceeds 32.5 billion of USD, according to the latest investment report, creating thousands of job opportunities and positive impact for the Brazilian society. Most of the largest Norwegian companies are present in Brazil with significant and long-term investments.”

Mr. Solberg also mentioned that “According to the latest NSA Maritime Outlook Report, Brazil is the most important market, outside the North Sea, for Norwegian shipowners from the offshore segment, and is also one of the main markets for deep sea and drilling rig sectors. The country recently approved a new Decree outlining the legal and regulatory framework for the offshore wind sector and also passed a new Law for the cabotage, which we hope will increase the presence of Norwegian shipowners in the country.”

Norwegian Deputy Minister, from the Ministry of Trade Industry and Fisheries, Ms. JANICKE ANDREASSEN was invited to the stage by Mr. Harald Solberg and reflected on the long-lasting relationship between Brazil and Norway.

The conference Brazil@Nor-Shipping was built to explore the Brazilian economic and market outlook, its business opportunities, concrete actions towards the target of zero emission, and the potential to strengthening partnership with Norwegian Ocean industry´s players to foster a sustainable market environment, in both countries.

During the week, the Brazilian delegation visited the exhibition hall and could witness the great variety of technologies currently available to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the maritime industry. Also, the Brazilian delegation followed a very busy schedule of bilateral meetings, seminars, and social network events.

The Brazilian Ambassador, Mr. Enio Cordeiro welcomed the Brazilian delegation, on his official residence offering great and additional opportunity to strengthening ties of friendship and mutual knowledge between Brazilian and Norwegian stakeholders.

According to Mr. RICARDO FERNANDES, the Executive Director of ABRAN, Brazil@Nor-Shipping 2022 was, by far, the most challenging edition to plan and organize, but the event exceeded all expectations, with attractive topics and a very special delegation, the event promoted great interaction between Brazilian and Norwegian stakeholders, reflecting on current and upcoming business opportunities and strengthening ties of partnership between the two countries.

For 2023, according to Mr. Fernandes, the new dates for Brazil@Nor-Shipping are already set, 5^th to 8^th June, and ABRAN/NSA will once more engage with its partners to plan and organize a great event!
